The Replacements
One week after the Super Bowl and thank God we still have football. But, the Pro Bowl is a strange event. The starters and reserves are announced back in December. And during the almost two months since, one replacement after another is named for players who are either injured, can’t make it, or don’t want to participate. Regarding the latter, I don’t know how anyone could turn down a trip to Hawaii without any excuse other than hospitalization, but it happens. So, in perusing the AFC roster, I see there are now five alternates who are subbing for absent players. Tarik Glenn (starter), Jonathan Ogden, Willie Anderson, Philip Rivers, Richard Seymour and Al Wilson are out, Marcus McNeill, Matt Light, Vince Young, John Henderson and Bart Scott are in. But, in the NFC, there are 10 replacements! Brian Dawkins (starter), Torry Holt, Jammal Brown, Shawn Andrews, Olin Kreutz, Jeremy Shockey, Tommie Harris, Lance Briggs, Brian Urlacher and Lito Sheppard are out; Roy Williams, Flozell Adams, Ruben Brown, Andre Gurode, Jason Witten, Pat Williams, Derrick Brooks, Antonio Pierce and Walt Harris are in. So, it isn’t exactly like the movie The Replacements. Nobody is on strike, per se, but this sure is a jumbled mess of the original roster.
