Terrell Owens Fined For TD Celebration
Blogging the National Football League, Blogging the NFL
Dallas Cowboys WR Terrell Owens was fined $7,500 for a touchdown celebration that included him using the goal post and football to poke fun at the New England Patriots’ spying scandal. Bad idea. You can’t use the ball as a prop in an endzone celebration. Of course, T.O. (and others) complain that the NFL is taking all the fun out of the game, but I guess it just depends on your definition of fun. One person’s idea of fun is another person’s idea of stupid. The NFL is just trying to maintain a wholesome image. And they keep a handle on these types of things because celebrations can (and would) get out of control if there weren’t restrictions. I didn’t find this particular “celebration” offensive, but does it really have a place in the game? I don’t think so. But as a player, you have to understand the rules. You simply can’t use the ball as a prop in a celebration. Or you will be fined. I say just hand the ball to the official and get back to the sideline. T.O. craves attention, though. So these rules have a particularly rough edge for him.
