‘Super’ Team Effort as Colts Beat Bears

by User ImageDavid Kindervater on February 4th, 2007

Peyton Manning won the MVP award. But it might as well have been the entire Colts team as they beat the Bears 29-17 in a rain-soaked Super Bowl XLI.

Peyton was a solid 25-38 for 247 and a TD. But, it was the Indy running game that put the dagger into the the heart of the Bears defense. Credit the entire offensive line which paved the way for Joseph Addai, who had 19 carries for 77 yards (he caught 10 balls for 66 more) and Dominic Rhodes, who hammered away at the Chicago D with 21 carries for 113 yards and a TD. They borrowed the Bears physical style of play and crammed it down their throats. So much for the Colts being described as a finesse team that thrived on the climate-controlled conditions of dome football.

On defense, take your pick. Maybe it was Kelvin Hayden who had three tackles and a game-breaking INT return for a TD filling in for hobbled starter Nick Harper. Or Bob Sanders who also had an INT plus two tackles and a forced fumble. The regular season’s worst run defense continued to shine, giving up only 10 points to the Bears offense.

I guess they have to pick an MVP and Peyton was certainly deserving. But if ever there were reason to award an entire team an MVP trophy, this would have been a perfect opportunity.
