Super Bowl Coaches Share More Than History

by User ImageDavid Kindervater on February 1st, 2007

Tony Dungy and Lovie Smith are more than great head football coaches. They’re also the first African-Americans to be head football coaches in a Super Bowl. Fittingly, this event will take place at Super Bowl XLI during Black History Month. The two will share this historic bond, but they also have something else in common — their Christian faith. Coach Dungy said:

“This is where you want to be in this profession. Getting to the Super Bowl is what we are all in this business for and you strive to get here. But I think that you have to know that, in the final analysis, in the long run it is not that meaningful. What drives me is my Christian faith, and understanding that as great as this is, we can’t look at this as the be-all end-all. I think that is important especially for young people to know, and I think that they are going to get that message from a lot of our players and a lot of the Bears players as well.”

Coach Smith added:

“My faith has been there all along. I am a Southern guy who was brought up in the church. Mom hammered us with it, not that you have to hammer that. When God has been a big part of your life all of your life, it’s easy to go along with that. It starts with the belief that God is the center of my life. A lot of my coaching style is based on doing what is right, trying to treat people the right way, and go from there. It’s one thing to tell people that I am a believer and that I believe in God, but I would hope that I don’t have to tell my players what my beliefs are. They see it on a daily basis and I think that would be the case.”
