St. Louis Rams Owner Georgia Frontiere Dies

by User ImageDavid Kindervater on January 18th, 2008

St. Louis Rams owner Georgia Frontiere passed away in Los Angeles today at 80 years old. She had been hospitalized for several months with breast cancer. Ms. Frontiere was the principal owner of the Rams since inheriting the team from her husband Carroll Rosenbloom in 1979. She was one of the few active female owners of a major professional franchise and is survived by two children and six grandchildren. Commissioner Roger Goodell issued the following statement:

“Georgia Frontiere was the first lady of sports in her native St. Louis. She returned pro football to St. Louis and brought the city its first Super Bowl championship. She had a deep love for her Rams and all the people who contributed to the success of her franchise and the NFL, especially former players. Her philanthropic work was legendary and wide ranging, but her special focus was retired NFL players and the arts. She was a talented and wonderful person. On behalf of the entire NFL, we extend our sympathy and prayers to her family and the Rams organization.”

I will most remember Ms. Frontiere for moving the Rams from Los Angeles to St. Louis. I still remember the day it happened. She was a native of the STL and I remember the whole move being somewhat of a financially risky proposition. It soon proved to be a goldmine, though, as the city of St. Louis provided a publicly funded stadium for $260 million with more than $22 million guaranteed in annual luxury suite and ticket revenues. The St. Louis Rams eventually became Super Bowl champions in 1999 behind head coach Dick Vermeil and MVP quarterback Kurt Warner. To this day, it was one of my favorite years of football.

In lieu of flowers or gifts, the family requests that donations be made to The Georgia Frontiere Memorial Fund (Fund #618210). Checks should be made payable to “The UCLA Foundation.” Please mail to UCLA Division of Digestive Diseases, 100 Medical Plaza, Suite 265, Los Angeles, California 90095. Donations may also be made online. For assistance, please call Patricia Roderick, Director of Development at 310-825-7501.
