Remembering Darrent Williams

by David Kindervater on January 1st, 2007

I was stunned to hear the news that Denver Broncos DB Darrent Williams was shot and killed early this morning. I guess it’s always shocking when you hear of a 24-year-old’s death. But, in this case, the senseless nature of it all was hard to comprehend. The more I am involved with the NFL, the more players I get to talk to and know. It becomes a little more personal. And while I never had the opportunity to talk with Darrent, I know he was thought of very highly by his teammates and considered a good person. He was a star in Denver’s defensive backfield having just completed only his second season. Apparently, Darrent was just out celebrating the New Year like so many other “regular” people. But, this incident is just another example that as a player in the NFL, you can’t be “regular” people even when you want to be. Jealous people want your money and/or your fame and they’re willing to take desperate measures to get it. My thoughts and prayers go out to Darrent’s family.
