PFWA Awards

by David Kindervater on April 9th, 2007

As a member of the Pro Football Writers of America, I get to vote each April for the PFWA Awards. Here are the categories and who I voted for:

HORRIGAN AWARD - For the person (not a player or team PR staffer) who helped the media best do its job last season. I chose Steve Alic, AFC Information Director at the League office in NYC. Steve is as professional as a professional can be. And if he doesn’t have the answer for something, which is rare, he finds the answer. I don’t know about that title, though. He seems to do a lot more than direct AFC information.

GOOD GUY AWARD - For the player who best helped the media do its job. I chose LaDainian Tomlinson. I’ve had the opportunity to interview LT three different times and he has always been extremely nice. He thinks through the questions and takes his time answering each one. It’s a pleasure to talk to someone like this. Champ Bailey was a close second.

HALAS AWARD - For the individual in the NFL who overcame the most adversity to succeed last season. I picked Carson Palmer. It was tough to pick, because there were so many deserving players, but with what he went through with his knee and how quickly he came back — it’s really an amazing thing. You know he had to be thinking about that knee each time he dropped back to pass, but he somehow overcame it and had a fine season.

ROZELLE AWARD - For the PR staff that best helped the media do its job. This was an easy choice for me, at least from the teams that were up for the award. I picked the Baltimore Ravens. They got Mark Clayton and Kelly Gregg on the show this past season and they were a pleasure to work with. Top-notch. I always look forward to working with them because I know they are going to do what they say they are going to do. And every interview is on-time. Imagine that.

McCANN AWARD - Named in honor of the first executive director of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, the Dick McCann Award is given annually by the PFWA to honor one of its members for distinguished service. I chose Indianapolis Star writer Mike Chappell. Mike has been a Colts beat writer since 1989, making him one of the nation’s longest-tenured writers for the same team. And I like his writing. Just Google him and check out his work.
