Not So Happy Halloween: Jon Kitna Regrets ‘Naked Coach’ Halloween Costume

kitna-costume.jpgHappy Halloween! Or not, at least for Detroit Lions QB Jon Kitna. This story is so stupid, I had to post something about it. Besides, it was the only thing I could come up with that had a Halloween theme.

Jon now regrets that he and his wife dressed up as an almost-naked man and a fast-food drive-through attendant at a teammate’s Halloween party. Jon’s choice of costume this year was in mockery of defensive line coach Joe Cullen. Coach Cullen pleaded no contest to disorderly conduct and guilty to impaired driving after he was arrested twice last year, once in August 2006 after police said he was driving nude through a Wendy’s drive-through lane, and a week later when they said he was driving under the influence of alcohol. He was later sentenced to two years of probation and ordered to attend Alcoholics Anonymous meetings twice a week.

First of all, I don’t know what kind of a nut drives around with no clothes on, but he had to be pretty messed up to do something like that. Honestly, I think you would have to be inside the Detroit Lions organization to know if Jon’s costume was considered funny or not. I guess it shows that Jon has a sense of humor, but I don’t know if Coach Cullen thought it was funny. When asked about it, Coach C. claimed it was no big deal, that it was in the past, but I can’t imagine it wouldn’t bother him. Then again this is a man that drives around with no clothes on, so who knows? Jon commented:

“If I would’ve known this, I wouldn’t have done it because I didn’t want to try to bring attention to it. All I was trying to do was wear a costume that people would have fun with. I wasn’t trying to demean Joe. If he hadn’t come so far, I would not ever have done it. He’s very confident of who he is and is very peaceful about what’s happened in the past. When we talked yesterday, the first question out of his mouth was, ‘Did you win?’ He seemed to not have a problem with it.”

I don’t know. I definitely think it was inappropriate for Jon to act like this, especially considering his outspoken Christian faith. It doesn’t set a very good example. I mean, he’s not perfect. He never said he was and I don’t think anybody else expects him to be, but it was in poor taste, I think. And the whole issue with Coach Cullen is more sad than funny. It’s definitely weird. But it sounds like he is doing better and that’s good to hear.

1 opinion for Not So Happy Halloween: Jon Kitna Regrets ‘Naked Coach’ Halloween Costume

Wow, that is funny stuff. I’d say it depends on the nature of Kitna’s relationship with Cullen. If the two are on good terms, and Kitna knows Cullen well enough to know that he’d appreciate the joke, then I see no problem. But that’s a big “if” and there’s plenty of room for things to go wrong. Seems like Cullen is okay with it, though…
