NFL Scouting Combine: Day Three
Back here at the home studio in NY, I’m already missing the action in the Media Work Room and the charm of the city of Indianapolis. It was a great trip — as always, too short — but a wonderful time in the Railroad City. I’ll be blogging the Combine from afar for the next few days as workouts continue inside the RCA Dome.
As I look at the NFL Scouting Combine and how it has grown in the three years since I’ve been covering the event, it stands to reason that before too long, we (the media) will be given access to the actual workouts. Right now we’re confined to the Media Work Room, which is not a bad place to be. But, I’m guessing that in the near future, we won’t have to watch the workouts on NFL Network like everyone else. Well, much to my surprise, that will become somewhat of a reality sooner than later as it was announced that tomorrow will be the first time members of the media will be allowed to watch workouts — that being the QBs throwing. (Note to self: stay an extra day or two next year.)
But, back to the here and now. Today was the first day for some real workouts to take place. O-linemen and tight ends did all their drills and here are the best results:
Offensive Linemen - 20 Shuttle (Samson Satele, Hawaii, 4.29); Three Cone (Adam Koets, Oregon State, 7.44); Broad Jump (Tony Ugoh, Arkansas, 9′9″); Vert Jump (Samson Satele, 33.5″); 40-yard Dash (Allen Barbre, Missouri Southern, 4.84).
Tight Ends - 20 Shuttle (Derek Schouman, Boise State, 4.27); 60 Shuttle (Derek Schouman, 11.56); Three Cone (Kevin Boss, Western Oregon, 6.96); Broad Jump (Michael Allan, Whitworth, 10′3″); Vert Jump (Derek Schouman, 37.5″); 40-yard Dash (Greg Olsen, Miami FL, 4.51).
Linebackers and D-linemen weighed-in and got their physicals out of the way. They will workout Monday. Tomorrow is a big day of drills for the “skill” position players — QBs, RBs and WRs. JaMarcus Russell and Ted Ginn won’t do any drills (saving their efforts for their pro days), but plenty of other big names will.
