NFL Scouting Combine: Day Five
The Combine is beginning its stretch run as today the D-linemen and linebackers worked out. In fact, you know the Combine is winding down because all the offensive coaches have left town. They leave, however, buzzing about Arizona RB Chris Henry and his impressive performance here. It would have been one thing if they had seen it coming, but that wasn’t the case. This is a guy who played very little at Arizona, starting only a couple games for the Wildcats. Just thumb through your favorite Draft preview magazine. I don’t think you’ll see him listed. Kudos to Pro Football Weekly who had him, but only as their 22nd rated RB. He’s got everyone’s attention now. See what a good Combine performance can do for you? Chris’ numbers included a 4.43-40 and 26 bench presses. Next to Adrian Peterson, he was arguably the most impressive running back here.
Anyway, back to the defense where the aforementioned D-line and LBs were trying to create their own headlines. DE Brian Robison and OLB Quincy Black did just that, both dominating their respective groups. Here were the best performances:
Defensive Linemen: Three Cone (Brian Robison, Texas, 6.89); Vert Jump (Brian Robison, 40.5); 20 Shuttle (Claude McBride, Tennessee, 4.12); Broad Jump (Brian Robison, 10′1″); 40-yard Dash (Gaines Adams, Clemson, 4.64); Bench Press (Tank Tyler, NC State, 42)
Linebackers: 60 Shuttle (Quincy Black, New Mexico, 11.23); Three Cone (Justin Durant, Hampton, 6.77); Vert Jump (Quincy Black, 41.5); 20 Shuttle (Rory Johnson, Mississippi, 4.07); Broad Jump (Quincy Black, 10′4″); 40-yard Dash (Quincy Black, 4.42); Bench Press (Desmond Bishop, Cal-Berkeley, 33)
Tomorrow will be my final Combine report as defensive backs and safeties take the field. As was the case with WRs and RBs, we’ll see some speedy 40-times. Appropriately, I’ll let you in on some interesting facts about the 40-yard Dash. The DBs did their benching today and 5′9″ 185-pound Chris Houston (Arkansas) had an amazing 27 lifts. I want some of what he’s been eating.
