NFL in UK a Guaranteed Sellout

by David Kindervater on February 7th, 2007

I got this press release on official “NFL International Series” letterhead today. The first regular season NFL game to be played outside of North America is already a guaranteed sellout. More than 500,000 tickets were requested by some 160,000 fans in the three days following the announcement that the Dolphins and Giants would play in Wembley Stadium on October 28. And this doesn’t even take into account the allocation of tickets to the teams and their fans making the trip from the United States. Of course, the stadium only holds 85-90,000 people, so there’s a bit of a problem. A good problem, yes. But there will be an obvious shortage when tickets go on sale in early March. Nevertheless, it’s exciting that the interest level is already at such a fever pitch. Alistair Kirkwood, the managing director of NFL UK said:

“This shows the appetite for professional football here. We also have had fans calling from across Europe, and from as far as Australia and New Zealand. I believe that the UK’s hottest sporting ticket this year will be for the NFL game at Wembley.”
