Michael Vick’s Dog Days
I’ve stayed away from writing anything about the Michael Vick “dog fighting” incident because there is no evidence to convict him of anything, so it’s nothing more than speculation about “what could be” and not “what is.” It’s certainly newsworthy. But the deliberation bores me.
What I can tell you is that 66 dogs, 55 of them pit bulls, were seized April 25 when police conducting a drug investigation raided the house, which Michael owned but said he rarely visited. He is a registered dog breeder, but said he let a cousin, Davon Boddie, live at the house, and that he didn’t know a large kennel on the property could be involved in criminal activity. Police found items associated with dog fighting, including treadmills, syringes and a “pry bar” used to pry apart a dog’s jaws, as well as a bloodstained carpet. Prosecutor Gerald Poindexter said they also found blood on a floor in the home. Several of the dogs had old scars that could be associated with dogfighting injuries, but authorities have said the dogs largely appeared to be healthy.
As I said, no charges have been filed, and the authorities involved met for nearly two hours May 21 to go over their evidence, but said only that the investigation is continuing. What I can tell you as fact is that Commissioner Goodell is very concerned about the situation and added this during his Spring Meeting press conference this past week:
“We are following it very closely. As you know, I met with Michael at the draft. I am very concerned about the issues revolving around Michael. He knows that. He pledged to me that he’s going to make changes in his life to address those. We’ll continue to monitor those ….. I want to make sure we understand the facts before we make a decision on this, and the facts are still unclear.”
The idea that Michael, or anyone for that matter, could be involved in something like this sickens me. Michael is not my favorite player in the NFL. But, he is innocent until proven guilty. So until there is some concrete evidence that points to Michael Vick as being guilty in this matter, I’ll stop writing about it.
