Miami Dolphins Hire Bill Parcells to Run Team

by David Kindervater on December 20th, 2007

Blogging the National Football League, Blogging the NFL

It’s been a good week for the Miami Dolphins. After losing their first 13 games to start the 2007 NFL season, the Dolphins beat the Baltimore Ravens 22-16 in overtime, then turn around and hire legendary coach Bill Parcells to a four-year contract as their executive vice president of football ops. According to team owner Wayne Huizenga, that means Bill will oversee “anything that has to do with football, directly or indirectly.”

I think this is an outstanding addition. Coach Parcells will bring a wealth of experience, knowledge and leadership to a team that has struggled this season. Contrary to popular belief and despite their 1-13 record thus far, it’s not a team that is far from being a successful team. Coach Parcells took over the Giants, Jets, Patriots and Cowboys and turned those programs around as a coach. I believe he is capable of much more under his new title.

This appointment comes one day after it looked like Coach Parcells was going to take the same position with the Atlanta Falcons, a team in similar need of front office leadership. But he cleverly used the ATL offer as a bargaining tool with the Dolphins. Dirty pool? No way. If players can do the same thing, why not coaches? I think he would’ve gladly accepted the Falcons’ offer had Mr. Huizenga not stepped up. But with a home in South Florida, he most certainly preferred the Miami position. And that’s where he’ll get down to business on turning around the misfortunes of one of the NFL’s most storied and proud franchises.
