Jeff Garcia Tops Depth Chart as Bucs Starting Quarterback

by David Kindervater on June 20th, 2007

Blogging the National Football League, Blogging the NFL

Training camp competition hasn’t even started yet, but Tampa Bay Bucs QB Jeff Garcia appears to be the frontrunner for the starting QB position. You really wouldn’t even know Jeff was a football player by looking at him (and if he’s 6-1, 205 so am I). Plus, he’s 37 years old. But, he’s proven to be a winner in the NFL and that, along with his minicamp performances, has been enough to convince head coach Jon Gruden to list Jeff first on the Bucs’ depth chart at QB:

“I’m accused of not liking young players. I just like good quarterbacks like everybody else in the league. I like guys that can make plays in a number of ways, whether it be through experience — seeing a look and not running a ball into a corner blitz, making a change at the line of scrimmage; a guy that can create with his legs; a guy that works the pocket and can throw the ball into congested areas and be accurate; a leader; a consistent performer.”

He just described Jeff Garcia. And with Chris Simms returning from a major injury (ruptured spleen), Bruce Gradkowski still learning the Bucs’ system as a young player, and Jake Plummer seemingly retired, Jeff is the obvious choice. He led the Eagles into the playoffs last year when Donovan McNabb went down with a season-ending knee injury in Week 10 and still has all it takes to be a quality starting QB in this league. I like his game a lot. I like his scrappy style. I like his mobility. And I like his football smarts. The Bucs’ offense took a big step forward when they signed Jeff and not only do I expect him to win the starting quarterback job in training camp, I think he’ll thrive as one of the better QBs in the league this season.
