Green Dots on NFL Quarterbacks’ Helmets

by David Kindervater on August 12th, 2007

Blogging the National Football League, Blogging the NFL

You may have noticed the green dots on the back of NFL quarterbacks’ helmets. That’s something new for this year. All QBs will have a green dot on their helmet. It signifies that the player has a radio helmet and the NFL will put the stickers on the helmets themselves each week. Only a QB can have a radio, and only one green dot can be on the field at a time. So, if a 2nd string QB comes in for a trick play, he has to have a different helmet to wear.

Why is it necessary for the QB’s to have the green dot on their helmet? I know it signifies that he is a QB and has a radio, but why?

Who doesn’t know who the QB is and who else would need a radio in thier helmet?? So… why the dot?

Its a new rule this year meant to prevent teams from calling fake field goals on the fly. Last year that happened a couple times where the holder on the field goal was told to pull up and throw or run at the last second because of something the coaches now saw. This gave them an “unfair advantage” in the eyes of the NFL.
