Goodell Seeking Player Conduct Policy
The NFL’s Annual Meeting in Phoenix is just a few days away and of the many topics that will be on the table for discussion, the one that will get the most publicity is Commissioner Roger Goodell’s new player conduct policy. Under the new policy, Goodell would have the ability to a.) issue heavier punishments, and b.) issue those punishments sooner than he can now. Currently, the league waits for the legal process to take its course before handing out fines and/or suspensions. The opinion around the league is that the small percentage of players who are running into legal trouble has commanded a great deal of negative media attention and poses a real threat to the league’s otherwise positive image. Commissioner Goodell has had little trouble gaining support from players because those who have stayed out of trouble resent the fact that they are viewed as criminals or thugs just because of their profession. It’s the one bad apple spoils the barrel theory. One of my NFL PR contacts, Greg Aiello, said: “He’s (the Commissioner) looking to develop an overall comprehensive and more effective program. As he puts it, one negative incident is too many for him.”
I fully support this kind of policy and commend the Commissioner’s desire to make this a priority. There are so many good stories in the NFL. It’s a shame the mainstream media latches on to the small percentage of bad ones. By adopting this policy and hopefully cutting back on negative incidents, it will give reporters less ammo with which to work and produce a sparkling record of player conduct for the National Football League.
