Gary Baxter’s Miracle Comeback Delayed, Cleveland Browns Place Cornerback on IR

gary-baxter-practicing.jpgI was disappointed to hear that Cleveland Browns DB Gary Baxter was placed on IR this week. If you’ve been following Gary’s story, you’ll remember he ruptured both patellar tendons last October in a game against Denver and has made a miraculous comeback to very nearly making it onto the football field. There was a time when doctors weren’t sure he would even walk again let alone play football. But Gary has worked unbelievably hard and it’s just disappointing to see him not make it back this year. In typical Gary Baxter fashion, though, he remains upbeat about the situation:

“I have been working hard for the past year to recover from my injuries, but unfortunately at this time I’m not at a level where I can be a fulltime contributor to my team. Because of that, I don’t want to continue to take up a roster spot that can be filled by someone who can help the team win right now. I’ve made significant progress, much more than anyone thought I ever would. Still, I’m extremely disappointed I didn’t make it on the field this year and I plan to use this as motivation to get back on the field next year. I’m getting closer to that goal each week.”

With this extra time to allow his body to heal (along with his brutal training regimen), I don’t doubt that Gary will be back and better than ever in 2008. Check out my interview with Gary earlier this month on the BIGPLAY Radio NFL Podcast.
