Former Steelers Radio Announcer and Terrible Towel Creator Myron Cope Dies
Blogging the National Football League, Blogging the NFL
The Pittsburgh Steelers and the entire National Football League lost a great personality today. Former radio announcer Myron Cope died in a nursing home in Mt. Lebanon, PA at 79 years old.
Mr. Cope spent 35 years as a Steelers announcer. He was a writer by trade and an announcer by accident — kind of like yours truly, except I’m a podcaster, not an announcer, and I wouldn’t put myself on his level anyway. His screechy voice was comical at first listen, but he became the trademark sound of the Steelers from 1970-2004. He also invented the incredibly popular “Terrible Towel” which is still a trademark of the team today.
I grew up on Steelers football in Pennsylvania. This was before the days of NFL Sunday Ticket, so when we couldn’t watch the games on local TV, my dad often had KDKA (or an affiliate) on our radio dial and Myron Cope’s voice became a familiar sound in our house on Sundays in the fall. Myron Cope will certainly be missed but remembered fondly by football fans everywhere.
