Flex Fit: Titans Control Their Playoff Destiny, Battle With Colts Moved to Sunday Night

The Tennessee Titans are somewhat familiar with this scenario. Last season, heading into the final weekend of the 2006 NFL season, the Titans needed a win over the New England Patriots, plus help from three other teams, to get into the playoffs. The Pats really had nothing to play for so it was assumed they would rest their starters, thus leaving the door open for the Titans to grab the final AFC Wild Card spot. Well, that’s why they play the games. It didn’t matter what those three other teams did because Tennessee lost that game to New England 40-23.
This coming Sunday night, the Titans are hoping history doesn’t repeat itself as they travel to Indianapolis to take on the Colts in the NFL’s Flex Sked Game-of-the-Week (8:15 pm EST on NBC). They won’t need help from any other teams, though. This game is entirely on the Titans. And Colts head coach Tony Dungy wasn’t clear how long his starters would play:
“We definitely want to maintain that rhythm and continue to improve. We have a lot of guys who need to play and who need to play more. We have some guys who probably we can rest. But a month is a long time to rest, so we have to continue to practice well and gear up.”
The Titans will have to play their best football to beat the Colts, regardless of whether Indy’s first-teamers are playing or not. This game will be a good measuring stick for just how good the Titans are. Have they “arrived” in the AFC South? We’ll find out Sunday with their entire 2007 season on the line.
