Dolphins Add Joey Porter
Apparently a 6-10 record was grounds for a complete house-cleaning in Miami. So far this off-season, the Dolphins have parted ways with three offensive linemen (Bennie Anderson, Damion McIntosh and Jeno James), QB Joey Harrington, RB Sammy Morris, WR Wes Welker, DE Kevin Carter, DT Dan Wilkinson, OL Seth McKinney, and most surprisingly TE Randy McMichael, who Ronnie Brown and I were discussing as an integral part of this team just a few days ago at the Arnold Fitness Expo.
Today, Miami began replenishing their losses by agreeing to a five-year deal ($32 million, $20 million guaranteed) with free agent LB Joey Porter. In Porter, the Dolphins add to an already strong core of backers that includes the ageless Zach Thomas and Channing Crowder. The duo finished 1-2 on the team in tackles last season, combining for a whopping 269 of them (Thomas 165, Crowder 104). Led by Defensive Player-of-the-Year Jason Taylor, the Miami defense finished 4th in yards allowed.
Porter brings attitude and playmaking ability to the Dolphins. The outspoken former All-Pro had 60 sacks (4th is Steelers history and that’s saying a lot when you look at their history) during his eight seasons in Pittsburgh and averaged 60 tackles/season. Whatever he’s asked to do, he’ll be comfortable in Dom Capers’ 3-4 scheme. And with the surrounding talent, the Dolphins will again be one of the best defenses in the NFL.
