David Carr’s Second Chance
Blogging the National Football League, Blogging the NFL
I read a great article on David Carr in the latest ESPN Magazine (”Don’t Think, Just Throw” - July 16, 2007). I’ve always been a fan of David. I believe he got a raw deal in Houston. Which is an understatement. I mean, let me count the ways he got a raw deal. But, I’ll let you read the article. It lists them all. What I will mention is his lack of pass protection. You’ve heard the stats, but are you really listening? David was sacked 249 times in five years. Can you even begin to comprehend that? He’s lucky he’s not suffering from post-sack trauma in some football depression clinic. But after being released — not traded — by the Texans (who took a $6 million cap hit because nobody wanted to deal), the Panthers were the smartest team in the league by picking him up. I believe David Carr will be Carolina’s starting QB before the end of this season.
Seth Wickersham’s article is very pro-Carr and essentially bashes the Texans for their unfair treatment of David. Longtime friend and San Francisco 49ers QB Trent Dilfer said about David’s situation:
“It’s a travesty, what happened to him. It’s what happens when you have coaches who don’t understand the quarterback position.”
Whoa! Now that’s telling it like it is. I like Jake Delhomme and I certainly don’t wish him any misfortune, but I hope David’s career is completely reborn in Carolina.

I agree that David Carr got a raw deal in Houston, but is he getting set up for another raw deal in Carolina? Carr might be the better QB, but it will be hard for Jake Delhomme to falter significantly, assuming Carlina’s offense bounces back this year as many expect. In which case, Carr gets an even worse deal - holding a clipboard until Jake gets hurt. Is there any way he steals this job from a healthy Delhomme?
