Cowboys Name Wade Phillips Head Coach
Much to my surprise, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones today announced that Wade Phillips is going to be his new head coach. Not Norv Turner, who I thought was a lock. Not Mike Singletary. None of those San Francisco guys. (This immediately makes the 49ers my sleeper pick in ‘07.) Not any of the nine other guys who were interviewed. San Diego Chargers defensive coordinator Wade Phillips is the seventh head coach in the history of the Dallas Cowboys.
Coach Phillips brings to this prestigious Dallas job defensive-minded football, especially in the 3-4 where he led the Chargers to a top 10 finish statistically and an NFL leading sack total. Shawne Merriman thrived in the scheme with 17 sacks alone. And he missed four games, remember? Coach Phillips will want to turn DeMarcus Ware loose in the same manner.
It wasn’t just his defensive philosophy that got him the job, though. He’s been coaching in the NFL for 30 years. Almost as long as new Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin has been alive. He’s been around football his entire life. Some of you may remember his dad Bum, who led both the Houston Oilers and New Orleans Saints. And he’s from Texas.
This was not a blockbuster hire for the Cowboys like Bill Parcells was. But the team didn’t need any more egos with Jerry Jones and Terrell Owens already in town. Coach Phillips is simply a good football coach who will be happy doing what he does best (coaching football) and leaving others to bask in the spotlight.
