Chargers Hire Norv Turner as Head Coach
Sorry, San Francisco faithful. Just when you thought your offensive coordinator was safely in place with a new contract, he’s headed about 500 miles south down I-5. Norv Turner was named head coach of the San Diego Chargers today, just a couple weeks after NOT being hired for the same position with the Dallas Cowboys, where it seemed he was the front-runner among nine candidates.
It’s been a whirlwind couple of weeks for the Chargers, shockingly losing their home Divisional Playoff game to the Patriots and then firing head coach Marty Schottenheimer. With an A-list of coaching candidates seemingly already hired (including Cam Cameron and Wade Phillips, offensive and defensive coordinators respectively with the Chargers last season), I think Norv Turner is an outstanding selection for San Diego. Sure he was fired by the Raiders in 2005 after going 9-23 in two seasons, but he got remarkable progress from quarterback Alex Smith and an improved offensive line and he helped Frank Gore become the NFC’s leading rusher in a breakout season as OC in San Fran. He won’t need to work any miracles in San Diego. The Chargers are coming off a league-best 14-2 season with the NFL’s 4th best offense. He’ll just need to monitor the continued development of QB Philip Rivers and step aside as L.T. does his thing. This is a very good football team who should challenge for the AFC title if they can stay out of their own way come playoff time. Their self-destructive, season-ending loss to the Pats was riddled with mistakes.
