Byron Leftwich to be Traded or Released

The Jacksonville Jaguars are parting ways with quarterback Byron Leftwich after four seasons (it seems more like 10 seasons). In a press conference today, Jags Coach Jack Del Rio said the team plans to trade or release Byron and named David Garrard as the team’s starter heading into next week’s season opener against Tennessee. I think this is a good decision on the part of Coach Del Rio. Making these kinds of decisions is difficult, of course, but after a stellar preseason, David earned the right to be the team’s starting QB. His numbers — 36 of 47 for 456 yards and a TD.

Byron has had injury problems throughout his career. He threw for 37 TDs vs. only 20 INTs in the past three years, but he’s also missed 17 games during that span. The Jags are going to try to trade him, but if there aren’t any takers (maybe the Falcons), he’ll simply be released. We’ll see how this plays out over the next couple days.

1 opinion for Byron Leftwich to be Traded or Released

I’ve seen dozens of Jags games over the past three seasons and Leftwich never seemed like a winner. He has talent but he’s not the guy taking a team over the hill. Is Garrard the answer? I don’t know but he does bring a little more to the table and he deserves the chance as the unquestioned starter for a full season.
