Brett Favre Wins SI’s Sportsman-of-the-Year

I wasn’t aware that it was that big of a deal, but Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre has been named Sports Illustrated’s “Sportsman-of-the-Year.” It’s all over the news and sports talk radio.
Good for Brett and all. I think he’s very deserving. But personally, I think Indianapolis Colts head coach Tony Dungy should have won. I’m a big Brett Favre fan and I think he’s having an incredible season, but when Tony Dungy became the first African-American head coach to win a Super Bowl back in February — and with the classy manner in which he conducted himself throughout the 2006-2007 season and his entire career — I felt he should have won. I’m sure he won’t lose any sleep over it.
I don’t pay a whole lot of attention to SI. It’s a fine magazine with great photographs and good writers (just for the record, ESPN Magazine is my favorite), but I couldn’t tell you who won this award in any year previous to this one. Congratulations, Brett. Yawn.

Why do you say Dungy should win because he was first African American? In a world in fear of racism reverse racism sure makes its mark. Do you whink honestly Dungy would have won if he was white? Maybe his award should come from Ebony Magazine?

I didn’t say Coach Dungy should have won BECAUSE he was African-American. He should have won because he’s Tony Dungy. He just happened to be the first African-American head coach to win the Super Bowl.
