Brett Favre Retirement Saga Progressing

According to an SI.com report today, Brett Favre does indeed want to play football in 2008. And within the next ten days, Brett’s agent, Bus Cook, is expected to send a letter to the Green Bay Packers stating that Brett wants off the National Football League’s reserve/retired list. At that point, the Packers will have no choice but to re-admit Brett. The only problem is, the team doesn’t want to do this because they would be taking a $12.8-million cap hit in the process. Their only other options would be to trade or release the man who has been the face of their franchise for 16 years.

What to do? The drama runs deep in this situation. Apparently, Brett feels he made the wrong decision to retire back in March and now wants to play again. Unfortunately, the Packers have prepared Aaron Rodgers for the starting spot and his patience of opportunity is running thin. As a team, the Packers have moved beyond the Brett Favre era and are struggling to accept the idea of his return even though he might give them their best opportunity to get to the Super Bowl in 2008.

I can’t believe the scenario is playing out this way, but can you imagine Brett in a uniform other than the green and gold of the Packers? I can’t. How well would he step into an entirely new system at the start of training camp? It’s almost unfathomable. I have to think the Packers will somehow find a way to “make it work.” But, quarterback needy teams (Vikings, Bears, 49ers, Panthers, Chiefs, Ravens, etc.) get ready. You might be in the running for one of the greatest QBs of all-time — coming off one of his best seasons.
