Bills Trade McGahee to Ravens
The Buffalo Bills got rid of former first-round pick Willis McGahee, trading him to the Baltimore Ravens today. In return, they’ll have two extra selections in this year’s Draft (3rd and 7th rounds) and another in 2008. The reported seven-year, $40.12 million contract will put McGahee among the top-five salaried RBs in the NFL.So, who wins — the Bills or the Ravens? The way I see it, both teams come out looking pretty good. But, it’s still too early to declare a champion in this deal. I am leaning toward the Bills, though, because they have the potential, depending on who they select in the next two Drafts, to sign three quality (and younger) players in exchange for one. Let’s not forget the typically short “shelf life” of a running back in this league. And as far as the vacancy McGahee leaves at the running back position in Buffalo, there are still a number of great options, some of whom have already auditioned for the part, namely Dominic Rhodes (Colts) and Chris Brown (Titans). They should be able to replace McGahee’s production via free agency and the upcoming Draft.
This transaction comes just a day after former Ravens RB Jamal Lewis signed with Cleveland. McGahee will bring fresher legs (even despite the major knee surgery that completely erased what would have been his rookie season) and better hands to the Ravens backfield. And he’s got two 1,000+ yard seasons in three years in Buffalo. He’s not as big as Jamal (20 pounds lighter), but he does have the toughness to run between the tackles and more speed than Jamal to run outside of them. The Ravens fill an immediate need. The Bills are still “on the clock.”
