Bill Cowher Resigns
Coaching changes have been fodder for news stories and blogs since the 2006 NFL Regular Season ended. Arizona, Atlanta and Miami are already looking for new leadership. Add Pittsburgh to the list of teams searching for a new coach as longtime Steelers mentor Bill Cowher decided to put an end to his impressive 15-year career. Since I was two years old, the Steelers have only had two head coaches — Cowher and, of course, Chuck Noll (23 years). Cowher was only 34 years old when he got the job. He managed a 161-99-1 record including (many) postseason games. Despite only finishing 8-8 this past season after winning the Super Bowl a year ago, I don’t think there’s any question Coach Cowher could have stayed and continued successfully coaching the Steelers. But, if his heart was not into the work and he wasn’t willing to put himself through that kind of rigorous schedule for another season, he did the right thing.
