Barber’s Retirement Uninteresting

by David Kindervater on February 14th, 2007

Is anyone as uninterested in Tiki Barber’s retirement as I am? I just don’t see what the big deal is. Since his untimely (some might even say selfish) mid-season announcement last year, mainstream media has, for some reason, attached themselves to this earth-shattering news. I guess it’s partly because he’s from New York. What’s even more irritating is the pomp and circumstance surrounding his post-football career as a broadcaster. It has almost as much hoopla as Howard Stern moving to satellite radio. At least Howard is an established broadcast personality. You may not care for his style, but at least he’s paid his dues. Tiki retires as the 17th all-time leading rusher in NFL history. That’s impressive. He was a good running back, no doubt. But who is Tiki Barber in the world of broadcasting? Are his radio and TV credentials so impressive that he could no longer ignore the overwhelming demand for his services? Maybe I’m going a little overboard with my unconformable attitude. You know, I wish him the best. But, I just don’t see what is so exciting or interesting about all of this.
