Adrian Peterson Has Torn Knee Ligament

That headline sounds bad. Real bad. But it looks as though Minnesota Vikings RB Adrian Peterson will only miss one game as he heals from what an MRI revealed was a torn LCL (lateral collateral ligament) suffered against the Green Bay Packers in a 34-0 loss yesterday. It was bad enough for the Vikings that they were embarrassed by their top rival, but losing arguably their best player was like salt in the wound. The injury is thankfully not deemed serious enough to require surgery or serious enough to jeopardize his season, so Adrian was breathing a sigh of relief today. AD explained the situation:

“That pain was horrible. I don’t know if you’ve ever experienced pain where you don’t want anybody to touch you. Just be still for a few minutes until it calms down. That’s the kind of pain it was. Not really knowing what to expect because it was my knee. I was just praying, ‘God please, don’t let it be anything serious.’ I was very relieved. It could’ve been a lot worse. I just thank God. I’ll be back soon.”

Adrian might be back soon, but time off won’t do his record-breaking season any good. There was talk that AD would challenge Eric Dickerson for two records — 1.) the most rushing yards in a season by a rookie and 2.) the most rushing yards in a season — period. But he’ll probably need to be on the field for every game to make that happen.

I hate to see this happen to Adrian and the Vikings. Minnesota is having a less-than-spectacular year at 3-6 with their playoff chances hanging by a thread, but AD has been a bright spot, especially as the only star on an otherwise inept offense. To see any kind of delay in his incredible season is troubling. And I can’t help but think he won’t be 100% when he does come back. You don’t tear and knee ligament and then go back to running the way he was running. At least I don’t think so. Then again, this is Adrian Peterson.
